What is DISM Host Service?

DISM is short for Deployment Image Servicing and Management; it is a command-line tool that functions as a service to create a Windows Pre-installation Environment.

Moreover, this service also deals with enabling and disabling some Windows features and settings. Its main problem is that it stores many temporary files that are bound to get corrupt.

Many Windows users experience this common problem of high CPU usage by the DISM Host Servicing Process. Unfortunately, this service causes more problems to users that are not limited to having a slow Windows experience.

Use /SFC scannow command

If your antivirus detected no malware, the issue could be caused by corrupt or missing files in your system.

We recommend running the /sfc scannow command; it is a windows tool that scans the integrity of your windows files and replaces any corrupt ones if found.

To do so:

  1. Right-click on the Windows button on your bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. Click on Windows Powershell (Admin)
  3. Click Yes on the pop-up box to allow the app to make changes to your device.
  4. Write /sfc scannow and press enter.
You must have admin privileges when running this command, or else it will not function.

The scanning process might take some time; sit back and wait for it to do its job.

Disable the Superfetch service

This method is another way to fix the DISM Host Servicing Process high CPU problem.

Superfetch is another service that pre-loads your applications into RAM to make them launch faster and improve your system.

It is not very recommended to disable this feature; on the other hand, it can be a solution to your DISMhost.exe problems. If disabling it did not affect your dismhost.exe problem, we advise you to turn it back on.

Steps for disabling the Superfetch service:

  2. Type' services.msc' in the Run command
  3. Find Sysmain, double click on it
  4. Under startup type, select disable
  5. Press Apply, then OK
  6. Reboot your PC

To re-enable the service, follow the same steps from 1 to 3, and switch disabled to Automatic.

Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BIT)

Your next option can be disabling the BIT service. It is similar to the superfetch service but it functions with transferring files online.

To disable this service:

  1. Press Windows + R buttons together
  2. Type' services.msc' in the Run command
  3. Find Background Intelligence Transfer Service, then double click
  4. Press on the Stop button if the service is running.
  5. Change startup type from Automatic to Disabled
  6. Press Apply, OK
  7. Reboot your PC
